For me, one of the beginnings of my drawing was scribbling in my childhood. Laying on the tatami mat and drawing while daydreaming, the sound and smell of pencil scratching on paper was very comforting, and that sensation faintly still remains in me. Another origin is drawing plaster busts in the art room of my high school. I tried again and again to capture the figure’s proportion, as well as the facial expression made by light and shadows coming from the north window. It was the first experience for me to face the various issues of painting – overall picture and details, line and boundaries, grades of light and shade, the illusion on paper and depth of space, the relationship between that illusion and one’s chosen materials – investigating when something didn’t feel right, finding some resolution that made sense to me, and finding a conclusion with my body. I think this was about more than just replicating a finely carved Greek statue.
The act making an image by scribbling versus the act of facing the subject before you, observing it, then abstracting something – these styles may appear different like two different sketching/drawing experiences, but both are part of me and have an inseparable relationship. Recently, I make artwork while conscious of this.

One of main motifs in my work is the relationship between food and body, and how this manifests in spirit and the practice of painting. While modern globalization has meant that many commodities from around the world can be purchased, and this includes food, this however has led to a more homogenized world, and my sense of distance becomes increasingly tenuous given our mediated relationship via commodities. I realized and feel that it is important to retrace my roots, to explore where I was born and the local culture, and its environment.
In addition to my interest in food, I’m interested in the relationship between the practice of painting, and the substance of my medium, which is inhabited with spirituality. The Japanese places a good deal of spiritual importance on water, and when you make tofu or Japanese ink, water is essential. Kyoto particularly has great many artistic treasures-sculpture, architecture, painting and other cultural assets-which have historical depth. The historical depth of Kyoto functions as the mother of creativity, and has considerable impact on me.
Until now I have been painting with oil, but it is only in the last hundred years that Japanese have used oil. The work in the show is illustrative of my efforts to reconcile with my materials. I once again experiment using collage and linseed oil with water-soluble glue in emulsion on rice paper.
